Hitachi Software Engineering Co. Ltd. developed pioneering technologies in the field of GIS (Geographical Information Systems). The "Any*GIS" mapping information system was the first system to be certified CORBA compliant, the OpenGIS Consortium standard for cross-platform communication.

This next-generation GIS basic software uses distributed-object technologies and allows sharing of mapping information and management information distributed over Internet networks, independent of operating systems or platforms. As a thin-client GIS operating seamlessly over networks, as well as on any Internet browser, "Any*GIS" has achieved interoperability, including comprehensive mapping information and related management information. Moreover, it has become the exclusive distributor for satellite imagery in Japan and the Asian region, in cooperation with EarthWatch in the US.
