Hitachi Software Engineering Co. Ltd. developed the StarBoard electronic white board, combining world-class handwriting recognition and multimedia technologies. The product was introduced in Japan and Europe in April 1999. Shipments to date have exceeded 20,000 units. This system allows mouse operation and on-screen pen writing, in addition to sharing personal computer data by projecting it onto the digital board. The StarBoard also allows conferencing with networked remote users.

In the European market, organizations such as Daimler-Chrysler, German Telecom, Peugeot, Lyons, and British educational organizations use StarBoard because of its interactive presentation capabilities and ease-of-use. In Britain, the StarBoard was awarded a prize for outstanding business equipment according to popular user vote, in the Presentation Division of the "Excellence Awards 2000."

Hitachi Software considers this product to be its third strategic product for foreign markets, following bio-informatics and mapping information systems.
