Hitachi Software Interactive Communications Group Unveils Interactive Whiteboard Technology Products at InfoComm 2003

ORLANDO, FLORIDA, June 3, 2003 — Marking the InfoComm 2003 debut of its new interactive whiteboard technology, Hitachi's Interactive Communications Group today unveiled the new StarBoardTM F-60 and F-75 whiteboards. These interactive communications systems and their associated software advance the level of interactivity previously available and permit presenters to run computer applications and add free-hand annotations to the displayed graphics.

The new StarBoard F-60 and F-75 use a combination of ultrasound and infrared technology to sense the location of pen type devices near the surface. The surface itself is not an active component and therefore is not prone to any form of degradation or to introduce spurious contact actions into the presentation. The 60" and 75" display areas provide a very large image on which to work and provide pinpoint accuracy in running applications and adding comments and annotations to presentations. Users can precisely annotate presentations using a new hovering capability that allows the pen to move the cursor on the screen without having to make direct contact.

"With the StarBoard F-60 and F-75 new product introductions at InfoComm 2003, Hitachi is raising the bar of performance-value in the interactive whiteboard marketplace," said Ralph Zak, Director, Hitachi Interactive Communications Group. "We have drawn on the tradition of innovation and advanced digital technology at Hitachi to create the most powerful, yet economically sensible communications products available today."

The StarBoard F-60 and F-75 are available with either built-in wireless technology to link to the host computer, or serial interfaces for wired connections. The systems come standard with wall mounting brackets. Floor stands are optional. These systems use a durable surface material that is suitable for both electronic sensing-based writing and dry-erase writing.

When combined with the new software Release 5.1, Hitachi's new interactive whiteboards add depth to any presentation. Boasting a wide array of new features, the latest release complements the existing character recognition software with geometric object recognition software that converts freehand geometric objects, such as circles and triangles, to smooth drafting quality geometric objects. Further, object management software provides a very flexible "spotlighting" feature to highlight sections of a presentation page, and object manipulation operations such as Undo, Redo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Color, and Adjust Line Width are contained in Release 5.1 software.
