Hitachi Software Receives Top Marks from Students and Instructors at Phoenix College

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA, www.hitachi.us, March 16, 2005 — Underlining its ability to provide educators and students with interactive presentation and collaboration technologies that offer reliability, ease of use and cost-effective performance, Hitachi Software today announced the extensive 30+ room installation of StarBoard® EM Panels and StarBoard T-15XL Interactive LCD Displays at Phoenix College in Arizona. Sold through Troxell Communications, the substantial installation at Phoenix College is a major step towards the creation of a totally integrated to a complete interactive communications classroom.

“We wanted to make classroom presentation technologies as intuitive as possible for professors and students alike,” said Mike Poplin, director of Media Services at Phoenix College. “We worked with the faculty to find the ultimate classroom technology solution. After test-driving and evaluating several systems, the professors requested the Hitachi Software StarBoard systems for their reliability, user-friendliness and dynamic communication.”

The Hitachi Software StarBoard 15” interactive LCD panels have enabled classroom presentations at Phoenix College to become significantly more interactive. Instructors face the students and control the presentations directly on the panel from outside the range of the projector, avoiding glare and providing students with an unobstructed view of the presentation.

“Professors were delighted with the original EM Panels and the newer T-15XL tools that supercharge their PowerPoint presentations,” commented Poplin. “Our faculty and students were able to reap all of the benefits of the advanced functionality of Hitachi StarBoard software.”

Poplin and the Media Services team set up a faculty training facility on campus, and regularly hold sessions to instruct professors on the advanced features of the Hitachi Software StarBoard systems. Since the introduction of the training facility, there has been an explosion of usage of the EM Panels and T-15XL systems for a wide range of classroom presentation applications.

“Professors are especially impressed with the advanced handwriting recognition feature in the StarBoard Software that allows them to edit Word documents and enter formulas on Excel spreadsheets directly on the screen, without the use of a keyboard,” said Poplin. “StarBoard systems really enhance the ability to develop ideas and communicate concepts.”

As the flagship institution for the Maricopa Community Colleges, the largest community college district in the United States, Phoenix College serves over 12,000 students. The College is celebrated for its outstanding commitment to delivering educational experiences that provide students with a solid academic and technological background in preparation for entry to the workforce or advancement to four-year institutions.

In addition to attracting new students, retaining current students is among the biggest challenges facing community college administrations. Phoenix College has recognized the power of interactive presentation technology as an effective solution to help boost the student retention rate.

“The feedback has been fantastic,” commented Poplin. “With StarBoard systems in their hands, the faculty is more excited than ever to teach. Furthermore, the students are more focused on their course content. The future certainly looks promising.”

The Hitachi StarBoard T-15XL system is a compact, pen-driven, 15-inch interactive LCD display with XGA-quality graphics. Each system is bundled with the Hitachi StarBoard Software suite of presentation and collaboration tools. The T-15XL is portable and can easily be carried from room to room without requiring recalibration. The screen image can be projected up to any size, making the T-15XL ideal for educational environments of all sizes, from smaller classrooms to large auditoriums.

Educators wishing to further enhance the level of student interactivity should consider the BT-1 Freedom Tablet, a wireless Bluetooth accessory that allows any StarBoard system to be operated up to 30 feet from the computer running the StarBoard software. The BT-1 tablet enables educators to move freely about the room while delivering the presentation, and can be passed around to students to further boost collaboration.
