Linux Solutions
The Linux operating system (OS) has achieved significant market share over the past several years. The recent success of Linux results from its position as the most prominent OS of the Unix open-source moment for applications such as intranets, E-mail, Web, file/print server and some mission critical business operations. Linux holds the promise of trimming deployment and development costs, while reducing the risks associated with single-vendor technologies.
According to Gartner, by 2006 Linux will be an adequate Unix substitute in 70 percent of applications, leaving the door open for alternatives or continued upgrades of in-place legacies.
Enterprises continue to adopt Linux for its stability, reliability and low cost compared with NT and certain Unix operating systems. Linux has been deployed in various application operations, including large business operations such as hotel property management and retail, and high-performance scientific and research projects and medical and drug research. For example, Linux enabled Amazon.com to substantially reduce its IT costs and thus improve its bottom line, and both Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Amerada Hess Corp. use Linux-based high-end servers to process seismic data or oil exploration. Japanese steel makers announced recently moving to Linux to cut costs.
